Fighting thread algae

The “thread algae” is not a botanical-systematic term, but a collective term for algae visible to the naked eye – tufts, balls, cotton tufts or mats. Thread algae grow and stick under water to aquatic plants, stones and dead wood.

Thread algae develop very quickly in spring and early summer because they are the first nutrient consumers in water. By the time the aquatic plants grow, thread algae begin to grow at lower water temperatures. Due to this advantage, the thread algae grow almost explosively.

Thread algae are green algae

Thread algae have different manifestations. Mostly they appear as long thin threads (from a few centimeters up to several meters), which are partly interwoven in themselves. In many cases, the long-threaded green algae are interwoven in such a way that they can hardly be untangled.

Depending on the time of day, thread algae rise up and float as mats on the water surface. If they sink, they cover the bottom of the pond. Thread algae are adaptable and can become accustomed to chemical poisons, so that they become more and more resistant to them with the increasing use of chemical agents to combat them.

Thread algae develop when the water values are too high, i.e. the nutrient content in the water is too high. Usually a too high phosphate (phosphorus) value is the cause for the thread algae formation. With a lot of underwater plants you can contain thread algae after several years.

What to do against thread algae?

What are algae?

Algae are low plant organisms, mostly living in water, which are organized as unicellular organisms or as multicellular organisms. The name “Alge” is a colloquial, non-organic name.

What do algae need to live?

Algae don’t need much to live on. Nutrients from the water such as phosphate and nitrate, but above all sufficient sunlight are sufficient for them.

How do algae originate?

Algae produce biomolecules from water and carbon dioxide. The green substance chlorophfeyll, which converts sunlight into energy (photosynthesis), is present in the cells of the algae. Algae problems

For the most part, algae are of little value for your garden pond or lake. The filamentous forms (thread algae) and the plankton have a gigantic reproduction rate and their sudden death can cause an oxygen deficiency. The oxygen needed for the fish in ponds and lakes can be provided by other aquatic plants in the pool that would thrive without competition from the algae.

Algae problems are usually caused by an excess of nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) in the pond. From the moment a pond is created, nutrients from the environment are washed into it. The older a pond gets, the more nutrients it has accumulated and the more susceptible it is to algae problems. The water derived from fertile fields, meadows and pastures, forage grounds, disinfection tanks and irrigation fields accelerates the accumulation and growth of algae in the pond.

Excessive algal growth will atrophy or suppress other forms of aquatic plants. In addition, the sunlight required for normal growth is blocked. Problems with the taste and smell of drinking water and sometimes even the death of fish are also associated with the excessive growth of plankton. Filamentous and macrophytic algae often form dense plants that make fishing, swimming and other recreational activities almost impossible. A complete coverage can prevent the penetration of sunlight and restrict the production of oxygen and the food components needed for good growth of fish stocks. If the presence of algae prevents the planned use of the pond, a method of controlling the algae should be considered.

Algae control

The algae explosion and carpets from thread algae can be removed with a rake, a cheese-maker or similar equipment. However, this method of algae control is very labour-intensive and offers only temporary control. In some cases, the algae seem to regrow just as quickly as they are removed.

Before using chemicals you should consider the possible contamination of household water supplies and waiting times for irrigation of livestock, fish consumption, swimming and possible skin irritations.

A “biological control” occurs when one life form is used to control another or to manipulate the biological balance in such a way that an unwanted plague is adversely affected. It is wise to be cautious when deciding on biological control. It can subsequently turn out to be unfavourable if the life form introduced becomes a greater problem than the original plague.

“Barley Straw” was tested in England by the Centre for Aquatic Plant Management for the possibility of controlling plankton and filament algae. Tips for pond cleaning

To make the pond water clear, the water object should be cleaned with a pond sludge vacuum cleaner with water recirculation. Most errors occur during cleaning, when too many nutrients get into the water during refilling. When more than 5% of the volume of refill water (ground water, spring water, partly also tap water) is fed (e.g. during cleaning), nutrients are added to the water object, so that the water biohousing process starts all over again.

Low-nutrient rainwater is much less problematic. The so-called First-Flush (rainwater of the first 10 minutes), on the other hand, should not be collected as it contains large amounts of pollen, pollen and pollutant particles. Tap water or tap water is generally low in nutrients. Nevertheless, there are large differences that depend on the water supply. The water values can be requested from the water supplier or simply determined with the help of a water test. For phosphate-containing water we recommend the PO4 Phospatbinder for a short time.

Conclusion: When cleaning a pond, care must be taken to return the filtered (nutrient-poor) water and not to top it up with nutrient-retaining refill water from the tap, ground water or well.

Several ponds

If several ponds are connected together, each one must be equipped with a click device. The cycle must be closed, otherwise fresh algae will constantly be added externally and the other water objects will be “infected”. This would lead to algae growth before they could be killed by the algae eliminator. As an alternative, we recommend separating the water objects and providing each with an algae remover.

Both the electronic box and the click generator can be mounted inconspicuously without any problems and are therefore not visually noticeable.

The electronic control unit can easily be installed outdoors and is temporarily waterproof (IP67, dustproof, protection against strong water jets, protection against temporary submersion). We recommend to mount the electronics box from 50cm floor or to put it in a dry shaft, fix it.

When the device is switched on (mains plug connected to the power supply), a red LED for the click signal and a green LED for the power supply light up on the control unit to indicate that the device is working properly. The electronic control unit shows almost no signs of wear. To prevent possible damage due to moisture, the electronics should always be installed or stored in a dry place.

The algae eliminator has a life span of 10 years based on experience. The algae eliminators are designed with high quality components to withstand more than normal loads.

The following measures must be taken to ensure a long service life:

  • The G-Sonic can be switched off in winter when it is very cold or on ice.
  • In winter there is a risk of ice and snow pressure, which can cause water to enter the electronics box.
  • The electronics box should be stored in a dry place.
  • In darkness there is hardly any algae cell division and the algae eliminator can be switched off, e.g. from 22:00 to 05:00.

Functionality of the click tones against algae

The G-Sonic algae control device generates acoustic click tones and sends these signals to the click generator. The click generator is the loudspeaker under water, which emits the click tones as a complex sound wave pattern under water.

The clicks act on the vacuole of the algae, a microscopically small bubble, a cavity in the middle of the algae cell that refracts the light. The vacuole resonates until the membrane filled with cell sap cracks.

With the click tones, all native algae species, such as green algae, thread algae, slime algae, brown algae, brush algae, beard algae and blue-green algae die due to natural stress.

Due to the methane gas present in the thread algae, the dead algae rise to the water surface where they can be sheared off. The dead thread algae can now be easily removed and the result is quickly visible. In a rain shower, the methane gas reacts and the dead algae sink to the bottom of the pond. All other algae species decompose into tiny particles of 1-2 microns and sink to the bottom.

The permanent use also prevents the formation of new algae.

Studies and experiments have shown that neither flora nor fauna are affected by the algae eliminator. The click tones are completely harmless to humans and animals, including fish. The desired aquatic plants thrive much better and the water becomes clearer.

Click tones and biofilm

The biofilm, algae film, mucus layer, coating, growth, mouldy skin or sewage skin is a thin mucus layer that is often found at the edges and at the bottom of ponds. Many microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, algae, fungi, protozoa) are stored in the biofilm. Due to the nutrients present in the biofilm or mucous layer, algae can multiply very strongly. With the help of click sounds, this biofilm is reduced by 50-75%, so that pathogens have a much lower chance of survival. At the same time, the “slimy” layer is reduced by 50-75%, which makes the device ideal for swimming ponds.

Click tones and environment

The algae eliminators are environmentally friendly and free of chemicals. The sounds emitted by the device are not audible to humans and do not harm animals, fish or plants. This was confirmed by different universities (among other things university Gent) after long and detailed experiments at ponds (applies also to swimming ponds) and aquariums. Click sounds are produced in nature by many animal species, such as bats, dolphins and whales. Under water, humans hear the click sounds depending on their hearing ability.

The click tones are emitted by the click generator over a radius of 180°. The range depends on the model of G-Sonic algae free device. Placed at a favourable location at the edge of the water, the units can radiate sound to a semicircle with a radius of up to 150 metres, depending on the type, thus treating a water surface of up to 300 metres around the unit.

The click generator is placed in a favourable position at the edge of the water body in order to sound as large an area of water as possible. If you have a second external pond, it must also be equipped with an algae eliminator. The circuit must be closed, otherwise fresh algae will be added externally and the water object will be constantly “infected” with new algae.

Security is a major concern. All algae free devices have galvanic separations with additional fine fuses. Only one loudspeaker signal is sent to the click generator, with the G-Sonic swimming pond (S) models max. 24 Volt. All algae free devices are CE compliant.

We always recommend the combination of antifouling with our click system. Nevertheless, we have very good references without antifouling, only with our click system, where only the hull is kept free by high-precision clicks. The decisive factor is the Nutrient concentration in water. However, there are also experiences where e.g. with a high algae concentration or a worse quality of the gelcoat, hard lacquer the click tones alone are not enough, just like the antifouling. The combination of antifouling with the click system always works better than each system individually.

Annual antifouling coatings are no longer necessary, the hull glides better through the water thanks to the lower resistance. The biofilm still remains slightly, but without algae or mussel formation. The hull of the yacht, boat or ship is thus protected against algae infestation.

Due to the very low energy consumption of effectively 30 watts, operation with battery-buffered solar collectors is possible. The Solar Charger is responsible for the control.

How does a pre-separator work?

The pre-separator collects this material, so it does not pass through the pond vacuum cleaner. The animals and possibly also stones can be removed again and returned to the pond. The separation works by gravity which means that suspended particles dissolved in the water are completely passed through while heavier particles remain in the pre-separator buoy.

The pre-separator is supplied with a sponge plate, which can optionally be used in some suction applications. is particularly suitable for pond cleaning to return the valuable water. Mechanical filtration catches the finest deposits, as well as green algae and thread algae. Fine filtration with water recirculation means that no nutrient-rich filling water (phosphates and nitrates) needs to be supplied and water consumption is reduced. Function of the fine filter

The pumped water from the pond vacuum cleaner rises via the C-coupling into the water chamber and falls from above onto the metal screen elements. One mesh size of 300 micron diameter are used on the fine filter metal screen element. PO4 Phosphate Binder 2.5 L

The PO4 phosphate binder actively combines with the nutrients contained in the water and ensures clear water. The application is PH-neutral and turbidity substances are precipitated. Many plant diseases are caused by germs and bacteria in the water. Dutch and Belgian plant breeders, for example, use chemistry to combat the cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus). In many cases UV disinfection is used, in which the plants are irradiated with ultraviolet lamps (UV). However, the combination of UV and click tones is far more successful than if only UV is used. Are antifouling paints still necessary?

We always recommend the combination of antifouling with our click system. Nevertheless, we have very good references without antifouling, only with our click system. The ship’s hulls are freed from algae and kept free exclusively by high-precision clicks. The nutrient concentration in the water is decisive. For example, if there is a high level of algae in the water or the gelcoat is of poor quality, antifouling may have to be applied in addition to the click system. The combination of antifouling with the algae eliminator always works better than each individual system.

The installation of the algae collector is simple: the click generator is attached to the inside of the ship’s hull (ideally in the bilge). The click tones are then through the entire fuselage. You do not need a specialist for installation. Once in use, the device does not require any maintenance.

The purchase price of a Y-Sonic 10 / Y-Sonic 20 is refinanced within a very short time and the effective system eliminates the need for expensive antifouling paints.

Algae and Algae Species

There are thousands of algae species. In the classical classification of algae, the Chloromonadophyta, yellow-green algae, gold algae, diatoms and the brown algae are counted as classes to the group Heterokontophyta.

Green algae

Green algae types such as Chlorophyta, Chlamydomonas, Spirogyra, Cladophora, Hydrodictyon, Volvox, Spirogyra – spiral algae, Plantosphaeria, Sphaerocystis. The green algae also include the filamentous algae, which form green algae wadding. They often appear gelatinous.

Through the gas in the bubbles, the green algae drift to the surface and form a foamy carpet.

Blue-green algae

Blue algae (cyanobacteria) are not algae, strictly speaking, but bacteria, which at first glance have a similar appearance to algae and are commonly counted among them. With strong eutrophication, ie too high nutrient content, massive surface blooms or algal blooms form.

Brown algae

Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) look brownish and have a form of branched filaments in the garden pond. Brown algae are often found on plants and stones in fresh water

Brown algae in the saltwater look completely different, with large leaves and form up to 100m long threads, with which they root themselves in the soil. Brown algae in the sea can be found in cooler regions.

Diatoms

Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) are brown colored and called by a hard mineral shell, a cell envelope also Frustel. The brown alga consists mostly of silicon dioxide, as well as the brown alga. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) has the property of being very hard and is resistant to chemical agents.

Note: There are many cheap hardware store pond cleaners, so-called wet suckers. The low-cost wet vacuums are not suitable as mud suckers to suck dirt out of garden ponds, as they only have a suction chamber.
