Koi-Pond water values, Algae Print E-mail

Excess fish food, leaves, pollen, garden fertilizer flown in via rain water in the pond leads to excess nutrients = algae formation.

Kio-Teich ohne Algen
Kio-pond without Algae

The fishes suffer from algae when too many algae exist. The oxygen content found in water reduces and the pH-value declines.  The gas bubbles that are so dangerous for the fishes, they settle themselves on the gills and can trigger inflammation there.

Bei einem zu hohen
In case of too high nutrient-surplus, the algae are in spite of ultrasound still formed. Thus the water equivalent in a Koi pond have to match and should be adjusted to the optimum values.
  • Acidity level (PH): optimal pH 7 bis 8
  • Total Hardness (GH): Hardness degre of water, optimum 10 bis 15 °d
    0-4 °d very soft, 4-8 °d soft, 8-12 °d medium-hard, 12-18 °d pretty hard,
    18-30 °d hard, > 30 °d very hard
  • Carbonate Hardness (KH): optimum 10 to 14 °d
  • Ammonium / Ammonia NH4+/NH3: optimal less than 0.1 mg/l
    (maximal 0.5 mg/l)
  • Nitrite NO2: optimum less than 0.1 mg/l (maximum 0.2 mg/l)
  • Nitrite NO3:optimum less than 25 mg/l (maximum 40-50 mg/l)
  • Carbon dioxide CO2:optimal less than 20 mg/l (maximum 30 mg/l)
  • Oxygen O:optimum at saturation point  from 5 - 10 mg/l
  • Chlorene: 0,00mg/l
  • Iron: < 0,05 mg/l
  • Copper: < 0,05 mg/l
  • Phosphate: < 0,2 mg/l

Water Equivalent in Details

Nitrite is nutrient for bacteria
Too high nitrite value is poisonous for Koi and other types of fishes. The nitrite concentration should be under 0.3 mg/l, the lower the better. The nitrite concentration can be reduced through good aeration.

Nitrate is nutrient for algae
The optimum value is less than 25mg/l. Nitrate act as nutrient for algae, pond plants and should be under 40 mg/l and motivates algae growth.  Water plants and bacteria break down the nitrate naturally e.g. water plague. Nitrate can obstruct the growth of koi and other types of fish in case of too high concentration.

PH Wert is nutrient for algae
The optimum pH value is 7.5. The acidity level of water indicates the pH value. Extremely acidic water has a pH value 1; extreme basic water has pH value 14. Neutral water is neither acidic nor basic and has the optimum pH value 7 to 7.5.

Total hardness indicates the calcium and magnesium salts concentration
The optimum total hardness is from range 10 to 15°GH. The hardness of water is important for the biological processes in water. If it is too soft, the biological processes do not function adequately and the pond begins to stagnate.  The minerals are used by the ponds living organisms. Minimum 8° dH is necessary.

Carbonate hardness Bicarbonate act as pH buffering agent (Calcium, Magnesium)

The optimum carbonate hardness is from range 10 to 14°KH. Carbonate hardness ensures stability in the pond and react compensatory to contaminating acids and bases in water, the growth of pond plants is stimulated. If the water is not buffered sufficiently with carbonate hardness, it leads to lot of fluctuations in the pH value. This can lead to lot of stress for fishes and contaminant degrading micro organisms and in meaningful way this could lead to eventual death.
